The 108th Annual State Congress was held at the Aspect Tamar Valley Resort, Grindelwald from Saturday 20th  – Sunday 21st May. This annual event offered members the opportunity to hear from a range of RSL Leaders, have their say on a number of issues, discover invaluable information and insights as well as enjoy networking opportunities.

League Awards were proudly presented during congress by RSL Australia National President Mr Greg Melick and RSL Tasmania President Mr Barry Quinn. Life Memberships were awarded this year to Mr Geoffrey Wilson, Mrs Ellen Muskee and Mr Robert Fisher. Mr Trevor Duniam, was in attendance this year to receive his award for the previous year’s Meritorious Service Medal, the highest award the League can bestow on its Service members. 50-year membership certificates were presented to Mr Glenn Petrie Mr Donald Phillips and Mr Malcolm Reardon. The following Sub-Branches were awarded 100th Anniversary Certificates: Oatlands, Sorell, Deloraine, Bruny Island and Ross. Congratulations too all involved, and thank you for their tireless work to make the RSL what it is today.

Geoffrey Wilson – Lindisfarne RSL Sub-Branch – Life Membership

Geoffrey Wilson was called up for National Service during 1965. He served in South Vietnam from 25 April 1966 to 18 April 1967 with the 2nd Ordnance Depot.

Geoffrey has been involved on the Committee for a period of over 20 years, including President from 1992 to 1995 and Treasurer from 1999 to 2001. Geoffrey has been a long-term member of the Sub-Branch who has given a considerable amount of time and effort in collecting funds for Legacy Australia within our local community. Geoffrey’s outside activities bring great pride and compliments the Objects of the League.

Ellen Muskee – Sorell RSL Sub-Branch – Life Membership

Ellen Muskee served in the Australian Army Reserve, Royal Corps of Transport in Tasmania. Ellen was deployed to East Timor in 2000 – 2001 for 8 months, where she served as a L/CPL Driver in a Field Ambulance Unit.

Upon her return, Ellen joined the Sorell RSL Sub-Branch and has been an active member of the Sub-Branch for over 20 years. During this time, she has held several positions on the Committee, most notably as an interim President, rebuilding the Sub-Branch members confidence and trust in the Sorell Sub-Branch, ensuring its viability and longevity. Ellen continues to be an active Committee member ever since. There have been few who have given this level of commitment to the Sorell Sub-Branch.

Robert Fisher – Lindisfarne RSL Sub-Branch – Life Membership

Mr Robert Fisher presented his life Membership by Mr Barry Quinn

Robert Fisher was called up for National Service during 1968. He served in South Vietnam as a Combat Engineer with 17th Construction Squadron from 11th February 1969 to 11th February 1970.

Robert has been always available to assist the Sub-Branch, and as a carpenter by trade, he has completed a number of large projects within the Sub-Branch which saved a considerable outlay. Robert has given great service to the Lindisfarne Sub-Branch as he was awarded Club Life Membership in 2008 for his diligent service.

Robert is also involved within his local community conducting RSL Remembrance Services at the various nursing homes for the infirmed veterans and families who are unable to attend community functions. He has been involved in collecting donations for Legacy Tasmania at various locations also in our local community over a long period. Roberts’s activities within our community, over a long period, compliment the Objects of the League.

Trevor Duniam – Wynyard RSL Sub-Branch – RSL Australia Meritorious Service Medal

Trevor committed 34 years to the role of president at the Wynyard RSL Sub-Branch, during this time he was a stalwart of the community and the RSL.

His contribution to welfare, commemoration and history cannot be over sold. One of his most important contributions as president was the transition to a business model that younger contemporary veterans would want to be part of and always making them feel welcome and supported. Trevor has also been a long-term member of Legacy, the VVA and volunteer fire brigade. In recognition of all Trevor has done for veterans and our local community he has recently been awarded an OAM

 

Glenn Petrie –Sorell RSL Sub-Branch- 50 Year Membership

Glenn served with 6 RAR in Vietnam, he originally joined the Scottsdale RSL Sub-Branch in 1970, and is a current member of the Sorell RSL Sub-Branch.

Donald Phillips –Esperance RSL Sub-Branch – 50 Year Membership

Dick served with 4 RAR in Vietnam, upon his return he joined the Esperance RSL Sub-Branch in 1972.

Malcolm Reardon –Esperance RSL Sub-Branch – 50 Year Membership

Mal served with 1 Armoured Regt, he originally joined the Glenorchy RSL Sub-Branch, and is currently a member of the Esperance RSL Sub-Branch in 1972.
