The Senate inquiry into suicides by veterans and ex-service personnel was launched on 1 September 2017 and terms of reference published. Submissions have been called for and requested to be lodged by 7 October 2016 prior to the start of public hearings. While the inquiry is not in a position to address individual claims of rehabilitation or compensation, it will focus on the broad issues raised in the terms of reference.
The committee recognises that this inquiry will deal with matters which could be distressing for some persons. Persons interested in the inquiry who are seeking support or information about suicide prevention are able to contact a number of organisations, including:
- Lifeline on 13 11 14;
- the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service on 1800 011 046; and
- MensLine on 1300 78 99 78.
Other organisations may also be able to offer assistance and veterans, ex-service members and their families seeking support are encouraged to contact these organisations, including their local RSL for assistance or referral to other organisations or services that may be of assistance.
