Field of Remembrance Service

The War Widow’s Guild of Australia

Tasmania Branch Inc.

On Friday 22 April 2016 at 11am, the 21st Annual Dedication Service will be held at St David’s Cathedral, Hobart under the auspices of the War Widow’s Guild of Australia Tasmanian Branch Inc for a Field of Remembrance.

This will be a major emotional event attended by the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honorable Kate Warner AM, the Lord Mayor, other dignitaries, senior Defence Officers in full uniform, members of the ex-service community and the Department of Veterans’Affairs.

All members of the public are cordially invited to attend and a special invitation is extended to ex-service personnel.  After placing of the official crosses, the Field is then open to members of the public to the place small wooden crosses.  These crosses have been made for the Guild and are available from a kiosk near the Field and attended by Guild members.  This kiosk will be open following the service.  Funds raised go towards funding the annual War Widows’Guild of Australia Tasmanian Branch Bursary at the University of Tasmania.

On ANZAC Day, the crosses will be placed at the Hobart Cenotaph where they will form an integral part of the ANZAC Day commemorations.

The Field of Remembrance model adopted by the Tasmanian Branch has been modeled on the concept of Mrs CJ Pope, widow of Rear Admiral Pope RAN.  In 1952 Mrs Pope, assisted by the War Widows’Guild, organised the first Field in the grounds of St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney by courtesy of the Cathedral Chapter, and with the encouragement of the Dean, The Very Reverend Dr S Barton Babbage.  Similar Field of Remembrance Services are held in other Australia States under the auspices of the War Widows’ Guild of Australia.
